I'm going to Australia and New Zealand. It still hasn't sunk in yet but I am fearful of the almost 24 hour flight time from Columbus, Ohio to Sydney, Australia to Queenstown, New Zealand. I wonder how many bags of airline pretzels I can eat in that span? The fear of the flight almost didn't allow this trip to happen. Like most things we are afraid of in life, what you focus on is what typically plays out. Rather than focusing on the extreme flight time or the potential to be seated next to an NFL lineman or the smelly guy who takes off his shoes, I'm choosing to see opportunity. To experience amazing things we have never seen or done, we have to sacrifice and go through uncomfortable moments.
When the plane lands we plan to go snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef, walk the Sydney Harbor Bridge, and see an Australian Rules Football game. The list of first time experiences is long and I'm looking forward to sharing them with all of you in upcoming posts. What is your "stuck on a plane" in life? What if you saw it as an opportunity instead of something you were afraid of or avoided? What are you missing out on because of this fear? Shift your focus to opportunity and the positives along the way to push through this fear.

I realized that my hair was getting long and I was starting to look like a Q-Tip. The last time I legitimately got my hair cut by a licensed professional was at least 15+ years ago. Typically, when it starts to get long I just do what I can with my clippers at home and have my wife help finish the back. If you have ever had a "home" cut before, you know the drill. You wait for your significant other or parent to gasp mid cut and then when you ask, "What's wrong?", the answer is always a conspicuous "nothing". Meanwhile, in realization you have a 1 inch gash of hair missing. It's pretty much standard for the "home" cut.
I decided I was going to go to a barber shop for the first time ever. If you have ever had your car maintenanced, I got the equivalent of Ford's "The Works" package of hair cuts. First the hair faded and trimmed, followed by some eyebrow work, ending with a full lathered shave! If you've seen my face before, you are probably laughing right now. It typically takes me a week to grow what equates to a middle school-like beard. I was actually very nervous to go to a barber shop but had a great experience, even though a stranger held a blade near my neck. When was the last time you tried a new experience? You are guaranteed to go through a roller coaster of emotions along the way but you will grow in the process. Routine is great but it can also breed complacency. Try something new this week and if you've never had "The Works" package at a barber shop, you're missing out! |
