“Super heroes aren’t super heroes because they save themselves but because they save others.”I’m back in the blog game. I took a few weeks off to create some experiences that would lead to better blogs. If I am being completely honest, my wife went back to work and watching a 4 month old baby alone is a difficult road. The last few weeks have really captured the essence of life. I’ve experienced very trivial struggles like being stuck in Chicago traffic and experienced great sadness at the loss of a coworker. This blog will be a collection of events that hopefully resonate with all of you and stay on brand with the blog causing your emotions to laughter, thought, and tears. I started retiling our guest bathroom. Each tile job I have done, I’ve struggled but have gotten better each time. Tile work is not easy. I’ve spent over 25 hours in my bathroom already and I’m still not done. From demo, to reinstalling the Hardie board, to waterproofing, to installing the niche, to tiling, and to add finishing touches is just the tip of the iceberg. I know where every one of my mistakes are. The trick is hiding them from my wife’s inspection. Any reno project I do, Danah comes in at the end of the day and asks “questions” like, “Is there a way to hide that chipped corner?” or “Can we shrink the gap between those two tiles?”. After blood, sweat, and some choice words, these “questions” are not always what I want to hear but they make me better. The road to a new shower is a difficult one but I know it will lead to a beautiful destination. Last night, I was able to be a part of our 4th annual TEDx Hilliard event. As always, the speakers and their stories were incredible. One theme that kept speaking to me through all of their talks was sharing their journey, struggles included. In fact, Matt Carter, a speaker who has a New York Times Best Selling book written about his life, challenged all of the audience to be vulnerable and to share a piece of our own stories that may be uncomfortable to share but will help others. He said, “Super heroes aren’t super heroes because they save themselves but because they save others.” Often we only see the finished polished product, the best of the vacation on social media, or the smiles on the outside of people’s faces. I think that we can all agree that every journey we take in life will have difficult roads along the way. Now sharing my journey to retiling my guest bathroom is not super uncomfortable for me but I hope it causes you to reflect. What was the last “journey” you took in which the struggle was real? Could your experiences be shared with someone to help them on their journey? I extend Matt’s challenge to all of you this week. Share a struggle you have experienced with someone else. Not because you will feel better but because it will help them on their journey.
