I want you to look around the room you are in and find all the things that are RED in 10 secs. Stop reading and take 10 sec. to do this....GO!!!Now that your back to the blog, name a few of the objects that you saw that were BLUE. If you are struggling to think of something blue or are cheating right now and looking around for blue objects, you are not alone! What we focus on we become in life! It is amazing how by narrowing our thoughts, actions, and vision we can create a positive or negative future for our lives. One practice I have done for the past few years is the One Word journey made popular by author Jon Gordon. You select one word or focus and you work to live it out all year long, similar to a New Years resolution. The one word is different from a New Years resolution because of its simplicity which allows you to narrow your focus and drive you moving forward. My word this year is "Relentless". The Darby Hoops team is also embracing this idea in the hope that we can have no regrets, no reserves, and no retreats as we compete and inspire on and off the court. We bought bracelets for each of our players grades 3-12 as a tangible reminder of our word. I can look down and be reminded each day what my focus is. I encourage you to select a word that means something to you that will drive you in a positive way moving forward. Don't wait until January 1st! Start now and find a way to make it tangible. A sticky note in your cubicle or car. A bracelet or piece of art you create and hang on your fridge. This tangible object will share your vision with others and hold you accountable to your word. As stated above, "God demands it, your family deserves it, and the world is starving for it." Whether your word is love, commit, purpose, happy, or relentless, your family deserves it and the world is starving for it.

Don't work your life around systems but rather make the systems work around your life. This week was a blur. We took two days off for a family trip to New York, came right back to work with a professional development day, followed by two days filled with back to back lessons (One day was all kindergarten :), and the basketball season kicked off. I know that I am not the only person to ever have a busy week. It is so easy to get caught up in what we are "required" to do. I recently listened to a podcast on productivity and the speaker stated, "often we confuse urgency with important." I certainly get caught in this. Take a min. and ask yourself, "What is it that you truly want?" Don't work your life around systems but rather make the systems work around your life.
Often we get so busy doing what's "required" of us we forget to do what is required of us. We leave less time for our families, we do the urgent rather than the important, and we don't take the time to figure out what we really want in life. The subway was INSANE! First off, it's New York so there are millions of people. Secondly, the New York marathon added an additional 50,000 runners. Finally, we traveled with a 2 year old! Even though we were smashed on a subway, I'm so grateful for the trip. It really allowed me to spend quality time and put aside the "urgent" situations of life and focus on the important things I value. If you feel like you are on auto-pilot and looking to rebalance, sit down for 10 min. and list one area of your life that is important to you. Next, commit, set a date and make the consequence so great that you won't skip it. For me it was buying a $400 plane ticket. I promise you won't regret it. One last thing...if you hate being claustrophobic, don't ride the New York subway! |
